MONASH LIVEABILITY COALITION

 PLANNING WORKSHOP

Venue: Room SG04, ground floor of the Menzies Building, Clayton Campus, Monash University.

Time: 7.30 p.m., Thursday 3 May, 2007.

At our initial meeting on Thursday 29 March, we decided to call together representatives from each of the organisations and associations represented at that meeting to a planning workshop on 3 May.  There was some debate about how many representatives each group should send; I suggest that we limit it to 3 per group.  I will send this letter to one representative of each of the groups present, asking them to contact their members as necessary.  The object of the workshop is to prepare the ground for a meeting of Monash residents concerned about the decreasing liveability of their city.

Matters to be decided at the workshop include:

ISSUES TO BE CANVASSED AT PUBLIC MEETING: suggestions include: increasing density of housing development; insufficient public space and facilities to service increasing population; loss of schools; problems for children accessing existing schools; loss of sporting facilities and land; loss of cultural facilities; increasing traffic congestion; inadequate provision of storm-water drainage.

DATE AND VENUE FOR PUBLIC MEETING

FORMAT FOR PUBLIC MEETING: how many formal speeches; what kind of speeches (academic; political; from residents); how much open discussion; outcomes – motions; petition?

SPEAKERS FOR PUBLIC MEETING: suggestions include:

bullet Academics: Bob Birrell; other academics?
bullet Community representatives?
bullet Council representatives, ward councillors; mayor?
bullet Representatives of political parties?
bullet Other interested groups – Municipal Association of Victoria (Dick Gross); Victorian Local Government Association (Rae Perry); Ratepayers Victoria (Jack Davis); Protectors of Public Lands Victoria (Julienne Bell).

INVITED OBSERVORS: in addition to the above if not invited as speakers: journalists from Herald-Sun, Age, local newspapers; ???

ORGANISATION OF LOCAL MEETING: responsibility for venue booking, publicity local and metropolitan; ???

I look forward to meeting you all at the workshop.

Marian Quartly  (President, Nottinghill Residents Association )
