Auditor General Report Criticizes Local Council's

The Auditor General’s report highlights Ratepayer’s concerns across Victoria and gives reference to City of Monash.

The most common issue was Council's failure to upgrade and maintain it's ageing infrastructure. The building boom has placed extreme pressure on our council storm water system. Local flooding is not uncommon, 2 recent major issues were the Glen Waverley bowling club and many private properties like the properties in Waverley road and Mayfield drive that had over one metre of water flowing through their properties causing extensive damage.

The Mayor of Monash stated that they received over 800 calls relating to flooding. No one wants to accept responsibility, but at the end of the day the problem must be addressed. State and Federal governments use local councils as their scapegoat. Cost shifting by both levels of government have cost local councils several billion dollars.

Federal government is currently conducting a forum to assess the ability of local governments to raise funds. We see this as a means of reducing grants and forcing council's to increase rates and charges.

State government’s recent announcement that land taxes will dramatically increase is a major concern for Ratepayers, council rates are based on site value so be prepared for a whopping increase in council rates. Remember the State Government said amalgamations will lead to cheaper rates instead all we have had is increase after increase.
