A bob each way

I refer to your article in the Monash Journal 7/3/05. I note the statement by the Mayor of Monash,  Quote ” The Halls committee gave $10,000 towards the $200,000 renovation  of Hughesdale Hall last year, it is reasonable to expect that a committee managing a hall can contribute to it’s renovation and we demand that the funds now be directed back to Council.”

Is this the same $10,000 that Council used to dismiss the Halls Committees as stated by Cr Lake at the Council Meeting on the 18th May 2004?  I quote his comments “I am also aware of a recommendation hurriedly put to Huntingdale Hall committee to give $10,000.00 to another organisation unrelated to the hall”.’’ Therefore, has Cr Lake deliberately lied to Council or was he completely misinformed? Is the Monash owned Hughesdale Community Hall an unrelated organisation?? At the end of the day the money came from the reserve funds of Hughesdale not Huntingdale as stated by Cr Lake.

At that time we were still Managers of both Halls and we could use the reserve funds to improve the halls. That opportunity has now legally been removed by Council.

As the Chairman of the Halls Committees, I wrote to all Councillors and explained the Committees actions with regard to the $10,000. Only one Councillor responded.

He apologised for the decision to dismiss the Halls Committees and I quote, “In hind-sight the decision may have been made in haste. As Councillors we were not fully briefed about the issue as a result of the resolution and its affects, I personally apologise to you and the committee for any repercussions it may cause”.

The Halls Committees’ Members were all volunteers and this is a shameful way to treat volunteers. Councillors should not be allowed to manipulate the truth to suit their political ambitions.
